The project "The Multimedia Codices of Leonardo da Vinci" aimed to exploit the long dated experience of Giunti Publishing Group in the reproduction, duplication and criticism of Leonardo da Vinci's works, the Codices in particular. The key areas of the production were the Giunti Codices fac-simile limited edition, that had required more than 25 years of effort and the acquisition of the full exclusive rights of reproduction, but the objective was to spread the knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci's works to both specialised and consumer communities. The "database" of original manuscripts, drawings and texts is exploited through a more "consumer-oriented" application, in which the "never realised" Leonardo machines are shown as really working, his theories on physics and anatomy are related to todays science, his works of art are described and analysed in the Renaissance framework and his projects of buildings and cities are virtually realised making use of advanced 3D modelling.

The Objectives that the Codices project achieved the following:

  • European exploitation of European cultural heritage;
  • dissemination of Leonardo's works;
  • a reference product for experts, scholars and collectors;
  • an "edutainment" product for general consumers.

The contents on the CD-ROM titles are:

  • the complete script of the codex, with transcriptions, translations and hypertextual navigation enabled;
  • the "never realised" Leonardo flying machines virtually working;
  • his theories on physics and anatomy related to todays science;
  • his works of art described and analysed in the Renaissance framework;
  • his projects of buildings and cities virtually realised making use of advanced 3D modelling.
