European Folktales in the Information Age: From Text to Multimedia Technology

Info 2000 Project N° INFMM1088

The main goal of this project was to transfer to digital format one part of the European cultural heritage, relating to folktales.

Folktales are very rich in extensive European regions, some of them have crossed frontiers for centuries, and they have been an object of numerous collections in the past, besides having been a study subject of anthropologists and folklorists. Unfortunately, a large part of this patrimony is unknown, apart from the dozen common tales known to the modern media like cinema and television. To diffuse this patrimony, in the present age, its format needs to be transformed: to pass on from text in such a way as to secure the oral tradition on which the stories are based, to the multimedia technology in which is combined the original speech, the writing, even the graphics and the animation. To diffuse the patrimony also means to facilitate the reading or the hearing in various languages, in such a way that stories may be seen and listened to as much in the original language as the user's one.
