EURODELPHES
Electronic Tools for Studying and Teaching History in Secondary Schools

Joint Call Educational Multimedia Task Force Project N° MM1004.0

EURODELPHES' objectives were to design, develop and evaluate an innovative hypermedia pedagogical environment for teaching and learning history in European secondary schools. This fully digital and fully networked value added chain comprises
  • development of an innovative production system that will first enable segmentation and indexing of a large amount of audiovisual documents then produce a hypermedia educational service based on hundreds of hours of structured audiovisual archive material, integrating textual information and various items (photos, graphs) from history handbooks.
  • the design and integration of an online distribution system included in a wider multiple delivery policy (paper, broadcast, online and offline interactive services)
  • design and development of an innovative pedagogical software environment enabling teacher and pupil to search, navigate and manipulate hypermedia content online (including pedagogical monitoring).

EURODELPHES' anticipated results focus on trans-european synergies between educational bodies, broadcasters and archive providers, educational publishers and technological partners in order to:

    • promote deployment of electronic networks and services for education and explore new pedagogical practices integrating the use of IT,
    • contribute to the emergence of an European identity, however respecting cultural and lingusitic diversity,
    • validate integration and development of complementary applications for full deployment of hypermedia services in the educational sector and replication in other fields.

EURODELPHES also gave a significant contribution to consensus building in the European multimedia industry on key technical issues such as hypermedia and digital audiovisual data formats, methods and tools that will provide easy access to the European audiovisual collective memory, design of multiple delivery programmes with an emphasis on online services, methods and user-friendly tools for hypermedia content appropriation, etc.

Finally, given that EURODELPHES is a trans-european comprehensive value added chain, it contributed to define new business models built on the convergence of the computing, telecommunications and audiovisual sectors.
