METOKIS - Methodology and Tools Infrastructure for the Creation of Knowledge Units

FP6 - Information Society Technologies (Proposal-No.: FP6-507164)

For content to become valuable in the knowledge economy, its relationship with knowledge workers' tasks needs to be explored. The primary scientific objective of the METOKIS project is to make a substantial contribution to the development of self-describing knowledge and content structures, by clarifying the relationships between content and the knowledge that may be encoded in the content.
METOKIS will:

  • Create a prototype ('knowledge content carrier architecture') building upon existing standards, and prototype knowledge content models which will be developed for semantic annotation of multi-media assets and for trading of knowledge units.
  • Create applications that test and validate a ('knowledge content carrier architecture`) by putting it into action. To achieve this, the real world applications (each with different content knowledge) will build the following:
    • A decision support system for senior executives.
    • An educational on line- learning system.
    • Evaluation of protocols for clinical trials.
  • Develop a methodology and an economic framework detailing where and when the ('knowledge content carrier architecture') can be usefully applied.

Aims of the METOKIS project are:

  • To act as a pathfinder towards the notion of "Ambient intelligence."
  • To define the software environment, so that knowledge and meta-data enriched content can be used more effectively.
  • To lay a foundation for future tools needed by knowledge workers whose tasks will be increasingly based around the use of media content.
