SciFi - Fuell-Cell Technologies as Regenerative Energy Source

Raising Public Awareness of Science and Technology (Proposal-No RPAM-2002-00033)

Fuel Cells are a relatively unknown technology. The lack of information and poor general knowledge of this type of technology is in stark contrast to its intensive research and technical development and emerging commercialisation. Fuel-Cell technology, its principles, areas of use and advantages in daily life are areas, which have yet to be discovered.

The approach to a solution, through the SCIFI project, is characterized by a tight concentration of Information and Communication structures. It is being tested and developed on a regional level in three European regions: Stuttgart, Milan and Oberösterreich (Northern Austria). SCIFIs philosophy is to initiate a meeting, which brings people actively into contact with the science and technology. It aims to bridge the widening gap between the public and science in these individual areas of Europe. The solutions will then be transferred to other regions in an expanding network. One of the main reasons for the creation of regional solutions is to form centres of expertise. These centres will act as platforms in organising and co-ordinating the educative Information and Communication processes.

Connected to the project, EKV-EC (Ernst Klett Verlag-Educational Concepts) developed and implemented the FCE ("Fuel-Cell Explorer"). The basis for this system is information about Fuel-Cell technology combined with a quiz ("F-Cell-Quiz") on related knowledge.
